Location: 1325 Highway 77 in the lower level of the Upper Deerfield Township Municipal Building, (Cumberland County) Seabrook, NJ 08302

A brief description of organization: We are a museum and archive. https://seabrookeducation.org/

Intern/job duties and responsibilities: Catalog the collection in finer detail, scan documents/photographs, assist with creating membership/donation records.

Requirements and qualifications: College bound or college students willing to do repetitive computer based work and ability to lift 30 lbs.

Benefits of the internship: Gas reimbursement for specific short-term project work. Volunteer/docent/computer training and group trips.

 

Schedule and duration: During our open hours, (Monday – Thursday, 9AM-Noon) once or twice a week, 12 to 24 hours per month.

Bruce T. Peterson, Seabrook Educational and Cultural Center (SECC) present and Upper Deerfield Township Committeeman was honored for his exception service by SECC and Seabrook Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) at their annual 2018 Joint Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on September 12 at Esposito’s Maplewood III in Vineland.

 

Peterson was the second recipient of the John Fuyuume Citizenship Award, created to honor the memory of SECC co-founder John Fuyuume who passed away in 2016. Upon the passing of Fuyuume, Peterson was quoted as saying that Fuyumme “He was one of the finest men I have ever met in my life.”

 

Together, Fuyuume and Peterson partnered in the governance of SECC, with Peterson assuming the role of president upon the passing of SECC co-founder, Ellen Nakamura, but in actuality Peterson functioned as an honorary chairman of SECC from its inception, many years prior to the opening of the Center in 1994. Peterson, was honored for his noted service as president from 2000 through 2018, during time of transition and growth.

 

The presentation was made by incoming president, John M. Seabrook, Jr. of an inscribed pen and pencil set created for Peterson by Fred McFarland. JACL President, Michael Asada, also announced a contribution in Peterson’s name to Cumberland County Regional Animal Shelter.

 

Upper Deerfield Township Deputy Mayor John “Terry” O’Neill started the program with words of greeting and appreciation from Mayor James Crilley. O’Neill and Seabrook recognized the volunteers who operate the Center, their dedication and continued service of sharing the unique history of Seabrook, a melting pot where people of different races and heritages were given an opportunity for a new start in life at Seabrook Farms.

 

The Center is located in the lower level of the Upper Deerfield Township Municipal Building, Highway 77, Seabrook, NJ and open Monday through Thursday, from 9AM to noon

MINETA TO ACCEPT SECC AWARD AT REUNION

 

SECRETARY NORMAN Y. MINETA TO ACCEPT SECC AWARD AT SEABROOK REUNION

It is with great pleasure that the Seabrook Educational Cultural Center (SECC) and the Seabrook Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) announce the selection of NORMAN Y. MINETA to receive the 2017 John Fuyuume Citizenship Award.

 

The award was established by SECC to honor an individual for their lifetime of service. The award honors Americans whose outstanding achievements in different fields of endeavor have received regional and/or national recognition and whose contributions have added to the sum of human knowledge and/or enhanced the quality of life in our society.  

 

Secretary Norman Y. Mineta’s career in public service has been both distinguished and unique. He served in Congress for over twenty years and was appointed to the Cabinet of both Democratic and Republican presidents.

 

Secretary Mineta and his wife, Deni, plan to attend the Seabrook Obon Festival on Saturday, July 15, 2017 and will be present at the John Fuyuume Citizenship Award Luncheon.  The John Fuyuume Citizenship Award will be presented at the Ramada Inn (Vineland, NJ) Banquet Hall 12:30-3:00PM, Sunday, July 16, 2017.
